Sotirianaka-Altomira

Time approx 6 hours medium walking

From Sotirianaka follow the  new sign post marked Biliovos- Altomira, this is in reverse to walk one from Marvinitsa.

After just under a kilometre you come to a track on your left, take this. This will lead you directly to the biliovos. From here you start the climb to Altomira.

The biliovos is a wonderfully constructed kalderimi consisting of 75 curves and wonderful views across the bay.

As you reach the top you will see a well kept church on your right, follow the track away from this and on to the village of  Altomira

As you walk into Altomira you will see many caves on the left and what appears to be almost a chapel painted into/onto the rock wall.

In front of you are the springs where you can refill your water bottles.

Altomira springs

To the right of the springs are the washing bowls used by the villagers in days past. Sadly these are not original and the spring itself would once have been more decorous.

Altomira is coming back to life with houses being reclaimed by families who long ago moved to Kalamata or Athens.

Altomira ruins

By the springs or in the village is a good place to stop for lunch. Take the time to walk through the village, you can imagine how it must have been in the village square all those years ago.

To leave Altomira retrace your steps back to the Bilivos enjoying those wonderful views from a different perspective.

There is no taverna in Sotirianika so take plenty of supplies.
